  • What do John, Michelle, and the community think is the best MMO outside of World of Warcraft?? Tried some of them and they all seem bad compared, so am I playing the wrong ones??

    • I have liked a bunch… Rift, Elder Scrolls Online – but my pick would be the new Star Wars MMO. The story for each class is some of the best I have ever played. Once again it ends up feeling like a much better single player game, than MMO though – that is what WoW does best – the end game! The actual MMOness… but they totally fail at the interesting quests, good story, good single player aspects. I hear the new Final Fantasy MMO is great for that though, check it out too!

  • So…. Recently finished my latest build. Asus Maximus IX Hero mobo, 7700k OC’d to 5.0Ghz on water, 16GB GSkill 3600Mhz DDR4, GTX1080 in SLI (yeah, I bought the components JUST before the ti…DOH !), Corsair Obsidian 750D case, NZXT Hue RGB lighting…. and all with my Samsung 4k monitor… and I was happy with the build… but I had the itch… “what more can I do ?”

21:9 Acer Predator G-Sync monitor, is what I did.

After a lot of poncing about (the cable made ALL the difference. I recommend Accell DP cables !! The supplied cable from Acer only got me to 90hz.), I was running stable at 100hz.

Gaming on 21:9 is a, no pun intended, game changer. I thought that maybe going from 4k to “only” 1440p would be a disappointment. I was 100% wrong. The last time I had such a huge feeling of “wow, holy s*&t !!!” was when I first ran Unreal after installing my 2 x 12MB Voodoo2 cards in SLI back in the late 90’s. Yeah, it’s THAT big a difference.

    • Yeah, I have said it many times, 4k is a nice spot for TVs, 1440p for monitors – the screen is smaller, so the PPI remains (think 34 inch monitor vs 65 inch tv), also when you’re doing ultra wide, it’s closer to 3k as you’re pushing more pixels than 16:9! I have the ASUS one, and I have not looked back. I don’t mind the 100hz, although my other monitor is 165hz and does seem smoother, however with both being gsync it’s really just being picky at that point 🙂 Enjoy it! Ultra-wide for life!

  • How are you spending your Memorial Day Weekend? I’ve been catching up on some work, spent some time in my gym (completely empty), and finishing Dragon Quest VIII on the 3ds. Tomorrow, i’m going to spend some time at the pool and eat a burger, and hang a flag in honor of the troops.

    • For tomorrow: John and I plan on testing VGO stuff for live streaming on YouTube instead of shout-cast/irc, hopefully will play a bit more Friday the 13th, and of course, eat something grilled 🙂 I am considering buying Rime, but not sure.

  • I would love to hear your thoughts. This isn’t something that can be helped, because this is how the video gaming industry is, but do you remember when a really big game was released once a year, or once every couple of years? Now, a big game is released almost every 2 weeks, which i feel like it dilutes its significance, unless it’s just crazy good. I remember when “We Happy Few” came out, and everybody was streaming it on twitch and then by 3 days afterwards, people had dropped it (rightfully so since it wasn’t a great game) because another big game was coming out the following week.

I feel like very good games are getting pushed deep into he abyss. We have become consumers, but man am i feeling overloaded.

    Henry (from VGO Chat) Reply
    • It has good and bad aspects to it, sure, things can feel less epic – and sometimes it’s quantity over quality, but also sometimes you wait forever for something, and then it sucks… with tons of options, there is always something fantastic to play. I also still get excited about games which release at a slower rate, new editions to the Elder Scrolls series, or new expansions for Warcraft, etc.

      Michelle Madison Reply
      • Good point. It’s more of a “wedding out” process, there’s literally dozens of games released each week. But yeah the big ones that are worth the wait: the next Zelda, Mario, expansion, Pokemon game, next crazy pushed indy title, makes it worth the wait and weeding through all the other game.s

  • With the release of Injustice 2 here is my question. Can you still enjoy fighting games even if you are terrible at them? For me, I am terrible at fighting games, but I set the difficulty to easy and still have a lot of fun. Occasionally I’ll go online and get destroyed, but mostly just enjoy the story mode and single player modes. Injustice had a fantastic story mode and the Injustice 2 story looks great also. So, do you have to be good to enjoy a fighting game? Or are you OK to set that difficulty to easy (or ‘gasp’ very easy) and enjoy it?

    JediOfLight Reply
    • I am not great at fighting games, and in the past I have lowered the difficulty. I am not sure why I don’t enjoy them that much, is it my skill in the games, or something else… I think for me a lot of it comes from hating to have to do combos… but without them, sometimes I get bored with button mashing – I like games that use special attacks, or attacks assigned to certain buttons or key, or ones that use purely reactive (or preemptive) attacks. I think fighting games like that these days are rare.

    • I’m competitive , very competitive, but not in fighting games, or any online games. I”m talking about life stuff, like trying to out-do my co workers. Fighting games i suck much at big time. What drew me into Mortal Kombat wasn’t the crazy combos, it was the storyline, same for SF2, so i like games like DC Vs Mortal Kombat, and inJustice sounds like my kind of jam. I’d be all into it. I never play online bc i dont want to get demolished by a 13 yr old from China and rage quit the game and ruin it for myself, but if i set it to normal or easy, and i can get a couple of combos memorized, then it’s a lot of fun for me.

  • What’s everyone playing this weekend? This month?

John has brought up “Super Mario Sunshine” as his favorite Mario game, and I never gave it the old college try. So, I picked it up this weekend, tried playing it on my HDTV 50″, but it hurt my eyeballs, so i went out and bought a $3.99 13″ RCA CRT tv from Savers and it is BEAUTIFUL on it. I’m about 6 hours in so far, and while the soundtrack is repetitive (it’s the same theme in each level but with a different spin on it), it is REALLY FUN! I am going to be diving into other Gamecube games this month like OOT Master Quest, Super Smash Melee and DDR Mario Mix.

    • That’s odd, your comment got marked as spam, I think because you have a link in name – I manually approved it, if it happens again lemme know. That’s a good idea, to have a smaller, or crappy old screen around for retro games… also the game I am playing most lately, as everyone knows, is PUBg <- addicted.

      Michelle Madison Reply
    • Hey Henry! I keep a 27″ Tube TV around just for classic consoles too (or, pre-PS3). I would be nice, though, to have a remaster in HD with 16:9, wouldn’t it?

(and humble) There’s a whole subreddit dedicated to CRT gaming. If anyone has a Sony Trinitron laying around, let me know, that’s apparently the best CRT to game on. I was running netflix from my wii (yes, it still works) on the old CRt ..watched “Gremlins” and it was beautiful! I dont know, something about watching an old movie on a CRt the way it was meant to be watched that is magical.

  • I have a question. What do you think about companies making titles that used to be available on more than one platform first person only? Personally I think it’s messed up when older IP such as the Street Fighter series kind of shoots themselve in the foot when they do that. I even thought it was jacked up when the last Tomb Raider game was made to be a yearly exclusive when it made its origin on the original PlayStation and the Sega Saturn. People can complain about Killer Instinct but Microsoft owns the IP, but Sony doesn’t own the IP for Street Fighter. When third party companies make deals like this they shit all over part of a community that has supported them in the past. Capcom seems to be a huge colprut in this. They shit on Xbox fans with Street Fighter and shit on PlayStation fans who want to play the last Dead Rising (even though I hear it is coming to the PS4). I have no issues with exclusives. It’s part of what helps a certain console sell. It’s when you take a franchise that has a long history like a Street Fighter that isn’t owned by Sony or Microsoft per se and make it exclusive, well that’s bullshit.

    Sean Harley Reply
    • Yeah, it’s becoming a mess, the real true ips owned by each company are few and far in between, but with how popular gaming is right now, game companies would be silly to sign away the rights to only one single console or system… that is why I think we’re seeing more timed exclusives, than actual exclusives… or we often see PS4/pc or Xbox/pc.

      Michelle Madison Reply
    • I remember when GTA was ps2 and pc exclusive, it seemed to take a age before I could play vice city on my OG Xbox,

      Galiga Reply
    • If they have a guaranteed lump from a company for exclusivity, you can’t really blame them for taking it. There’s no guarantee that any game will actually make money. Look at Mass Effect Andromeda.

    • Total BS, Michelle, it’s like a back slap to the rest of us! Gamers are loyalists (and we also have excellent memories), the day i see Zelda released on PS4 or Xbone is the day i throw all of my gaming consoles, collectibles, games, posters and those silly pre-order perks like the Uncharted statue of Nathan Drake into the garbage.

        • I don’t know how you feel about fighting games but I’m looking forward to picking up InJustice 2 tomorrow. It’s for both Xbox and PS4. I used to play the first one a lot and loved it. It’s made by the folks who made Mortal Kombat and feature DC comic heroes. If this one is anywhere near as good as the first game we are in for a treat.

          • Yeah I tried the mobile game companion which I will talk about, I haven’t been into a fighting game since tekken – I will probably pick the new one up when it comes. People seem to be loving injustice though who have played early.
